In New York City this week, Stew participated in BookExpo America and the China Global Market Forum, connecting publishing professionals and content providers to discuss Chinese media developments and emerging opportunities.

He noted several interesting trends being discussed:

  • China is realizing its digital leadership, serving the world’s largest and fastest growing online population, which overwhelmingly connects via mobile devices. (source: Clay Stobaugh, Wiley)
  • China’s women currently give birth to over 16 million babies per year, with roughly 55% of family spending directed towards the child’s learning. (source: Jo Lusby, Penguin China)
  • In the US & UK, the top five publishers make up more than half the market, while in China, the top five publishers are just one fifth of the total book market. (Jonathan Nowell, Nielsen)

Reflecting on this year’s event, BEA Show Director Steve Rosato said:

“The Global Market Forum program featuring China was successful beyond all measure and plans. The conference sessions were full and there was an incredible amount of meaningful interaction between U.S. and Chinese publishers not only in the Javits but also at a multitude of cultural events throughout NYC. BEA laid a foundation for the industry that will be productive for years to come.”
